Missouri Scholarships

Located in one of the popular cities in Missouri, the University of Missouri – St. Louis offers outstanding education to their diverse student body. Having students from all 50 states, the USML (short for University of Missouri – St. Louis) is proud to host people from all over the state and also from all over the world.

Known as one of the largest public research universities in the state of Missouri, the University of Missouri – St. Louis offers great opportunities even to students who are in need of financial aid.

Types of Scholarships offered by UMSL

Most scholarships offered by the University of Missouri – St. Louis are merit-based. That means that you need to show academic achievements (High school GPA, SAT or ACT scores) and additional information (Extracurricular Activities) in order to qualify for these scholarships.

1. Freshmen Merit Scholarships

As its name suggests, these scholarships are for incoming freshmen who show significant potential in their admissions applications. For the following scholarships, the scholarship committee will be looking for three factors:

  • ACT Composite Score OR SAT Total Score
  • Class Rank OR Core GPA (Core GPA is not always the same as High School GPA)

A. Curators’ Scholarship

Awarding $6,000 per year, this scholarship is for Missouri Residents who meet the following requirements:

  • Score at least 28 on the ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Rank in the top 5% of high school class OR Core GPA of 3.8

B. Chancellor’s Scholarship

This scholarship awards $5,000 per year, and it awards freshmen (Missouri Residents and Non-Residents) who meet the following requirements:

  • Score at least 26 on the ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Rank in the top 10 % of high school class OR Core GPA of 3.5

C. University Scholarship

Awarding $3,000 per year, the University Scholarship awards incoming first-time freshmen (first-time means students who are starting on their first undergraduate degree) who meet the following requirements:

  • Score at least 25 on the ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Rank in the top 25% of high school class OR Core GPA of 3.25

D. Academic Scholarship

The Academic Scholarship awards $2,000 per year, and this scholarship is for incoming first-time freshmen who meet the following requirements:

  • Score at least 24 on the ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Rank in the top 25% of high school class OR Core GPA of 3.0

The application process for freshmen merits scholarships is very simple since there is none! You just have to apply for admissions, and you will be automatically considered for the scholarships up above.

2. Non-Resident Merit Scholarships

For students who are applying for the University of Missouri – St. Louis, their residency status is also considered at the admissions process. As its name states, the Non-Resident Merit Scholarships are for students who are considered as Non-Residents at the time of admission.

To be considered, the applicant must be either a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, and the applicant must be working for his/her first undergraduate degree.

A. Dean’s Non-Resident Scholarship

Available to first-time freshmen who are Non-Resident of Missouri, the applicant must meet the following requirement to be considered:

  • Score at least 24 on ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Not receiving the Metropolitan Rate AND Not participating in the Midwest Student Exchange Program

This scholarship covers 50% of the non-resident fees, and there is another set of requirements if you are a transfer student. Also, this is the first time that the Metropolitan Rate and Midwest Student Exchange Program have been mentioned.

B. Provost’s Non-Resident Scholarship

Covering all non-resident fees, this scholarship is for first-time freshmen who are Non-Resident of Missouri. To be considered, the applicant must meet the following guidelines:

  • Score at least 28 on ACT OR SAT equivalent
  • Not receiving the Metropolitan Rate AND Not participating in the Midwest Student Exchange Program

3. Transfer Merit Scholarship

Awarding only to transfer students, these scholarships are only given to students who are starting their first undergraduate degree.

A. Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship

Awarding $3,500 per year, the Chancellor’s Transfer Scholarship awards applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • Be transferring from Missouri 2-year post-secondary institution OR from SWIC (Southwestern Illinois College) OR from Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois.
  • Be transferring at least 45 credit hours
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5

B. UMSL Gateway Transfer Scholarship

The University of Missouri – St. Louis awards $2,000 per year to students who meet the following guidelines:

  • Be transferring from any 2-year OR any 4-year post-secondary institution.
  • Be transferring at least 45 credit hours
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25

C. Associates Degree Completion Incentive Scholarship

This scholarship awards $1,000 per year, and it awards applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • Be transferring from any Missouri 2-year school OR from SWIC OR Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Completed the associate’s degree before commencing studies at UMSL

This scholarship is a supplemental scholarship, which means that if you receive any of the previous scholarships (Chancellor’s Transfer or UMSL Gateway) you can stack this scholarship on top. That means you can receive one of the transfer scholarships and receive this scholarship in addition.

How to Apply for Transfer Merit Scholarships

Similar to Freshmen Merit Scholarships, these scholarships do not require a separate application. You just have to apply for admissions, and you will be automatically considered for the scholarship if you are a transfer student that fits the eligibility requirements.

4. Competitive Scholarships

Unlike the merit-based scholarships, the competitive scholarships require a separate application in addition to your application for admissions. The University of Missouri – St. Louis offers several competitive scholarships that vary in their values.

Since there are many different types of competitive scholarships, the general scholarship application steps will be listed down below.

1. Apply for Admission

Before applying for competitive scholarships, the applicant must be admitted to UMSL.

2. Fill out FAFSA

Since these scholarships do consider financial need, please fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible.

3. Complete online scholarship application

After completing step one and step two, the applicant must visit UMSL Application Portal to fill out the general application for competitive scholarships.

After completing the general application, the applicant must fill out any additional requirements that might be needed for the competitive scholarships.

4. External Scholarships

In addition to competitive scholarships, the University of Missouri – St. Louis offers students to apply to scholarships that are offered by private organizations and groups.
