Ranked among the top universities in the nation, the Central Michigan University offers academic programs in health professions, engineering, business, communications, sciences, and even technology. Because of their diverse programs, the CMU (Central Michigan University) is known for offering over 300 programs in undergraduate and graduate courses.
In addition to its education, the Central Michigan University offers first-hand research experiences to many of their students, and it offers great scholarship programs to prospective students.
CMU Merit-Based Scholarships
Most scholarships offered by Central Michigan University are merit-based, which means the scholarships are given to students based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and standardized test scores.
1. Centralis Scholarship Program
Containing the CMU highest awards, the Centralis Scholarship Program offers great opportunities to incoming freshmen. To be considered for this program, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7
- Scored at least 27 on ACT OR at least 1260 on SAT

A. Centralis Scholar Award
This scholarship award is a full-ride scholarship that covers full tuition, room & board, and mandatory fees for four years.
Since this is a competitive scholarship, the applicant must submit a separate application in addition to their application for admissions. In that separate application, you will have to fill out some information, and you will be required to fill out an essay.
The Central Michigan University Scholarship Committee will choose whether to give the scholarship or not based on your academic achievements (GPA / SAT OR ACT) and your essay.
B. Centralis Gold Award
Unlike the first one, the Centralis Gold Award only covers the full tuition; however, it requires a separate application since it is a competitive scholarship just like the first one.

2. Academic Awards
The Academic Awards offered by Central Michigan University do not require a separate application; however, the applicants are encouraged to apply as early as they can since funding is limited for these merit scholarships.
A. Academic Prestige Award
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.25
- Scored at least 27 on ACT OR at least 1250 on SAT
Scholarship Value: $6,500 per year
B. Academic Excellence Award
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.00
- Scored at least 23 on ACT OR at least 1100 on SAT
Scholarship Value: $5,500 per year
C. Academic Success Award
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.00
- Scored at least 21 on ACT OR at least 1040 on SAT
Scholarship Value: $3,500 per year
3. CMU Leader Advancement Scholarship Program
Available to high school seniors, the Leader Advancement Scholarships are for students who participated in ANY leadership positions during your high school career.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.00
- Be admitted to Central Michigan University
Scholarship Value: $5,000 ~ $8,000 per year

4. CMU Lloyd M. Cofer and Multicultural Advancement Scholarship
A. Multicultural Advancement Award of Distinction
This scholarship doesn’t go to just any student, but it is awarded to a distinct group of students that are passionate about diversity and interested in making a difference. Since this is a competitive scholarship, the applicant needs to submit a separate application.

Scholarship Value: Full Tuition, Room & Board, and Book Stipend
B. Multicultural Advancement Scholarship
Same as above, the Multicultural Advancement Scholarship is for students who are interested in the advancement of underrepresented in the United States. All the scholarships are renewable for four years, so make sure that you check the renewal criteria also!
Scholarship Value: $4,000 per year
B. Lloyd M. Cofer Scholarship
The first eligibility requirement for this scholarship is the same as the Multicultural Advancement Scholarship eligibility requirement, and the second requirement is that the applicant needs to be a graduate of a Detroit high school.
Scholarship Value: $4,000 per year
C. Native American Advancement Award
To students who have shown commitment in helping Native American communities, this scholarship is awarded to only one incoming freshman.
Scholarship Value: $3,000 per year
