Located in the state of Alaska, the UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks) currently has six campuses that are spread out over the state. Most students will dismiss this university from their prospective list since it is located in the cold state of Alaska; however, University of Alaska Fairbanks are known for their quality education.
Being Alaska’s only national university, UAF offers near 200 academic programs, and, in addition, UAF’s student to faculty ratio is really low, which makes professors more accessible to students, unlike in huge universities where professors teach hundreds of students at one time.
Types of Scholarships Offered at UAF

1. UAF Scholarships
To simplify the scholarship application, the University of Alaska Fairbanks has created a scholarship portal. In that scholarship portal, the applicants must complete the general application, which will count for over 400 scholarships.

Since each scholarship has different requirements, there might be additional information that you need to plug in. 2. Admissions Scholarships
Admissions Scholarships are exactly the same as merit-based scholarships offered in many other universities. Awarded to incoming freshmen, these scholarships are based on your academic achievements (GPA / Standardized Test Scores).
A. Nanook Gold Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 4.0
- Scored at least 30 on ACT OR at least 1410 on SAT
Scholarship Value: Full Tuition
B. Chancellor’s Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.6
- Scored at least 27 on ACT OR at least 1300 on SAT
Scholarship Value: $4,000 per year

3. Alaska Performance Scholarships
Founded to encourage students to come to Alaska to study, the Alaska Performance Scholarships awards students based on their academic achievements. To qualify, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be working and completing the APS (Alaska Performance Scholarship) curriculum
- Maintained a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Scored at least 21 on ACT OR 1060 on SAT
- Submit the FAFSA
Scholarship Value: $2,000 ~ $5,000 per year

University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Grants
Like scholarships, grants do not have to be repaid; however, there is one grant that requires repayment if you do not fulfill your obligations.
1. Federal Grants
For federal grants, the main requirement is FAFSA. After filing this form, the federal government will automatically consider applicants with demonstrated need.
A. Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
Scholarship Value: $500 per year
B. Federal Pell Grant
Scholarship Value: $600 ~ $6,000 per year
C. Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH)
Unlike the first two federal grants, the TEACH Grant has some strings attached. The scholarship recipients of this grant need to teach for a certain period of time after graduation; however, the grant needs to be repaid with interest if the scholarship recipient does not fulfill his obligations.
Over half of TEACH Grant Recipients have gotten into debt because they have failed to fulfill their obligations. Make sure that you can and do teach if you choose this grant as your financial aid option.
Scholarship Value: $4,000 per year
2. State Grants
In addition to filling out the FAFSA, the applicants for state grants have to meet another requirement. To apply for state grants, the applicants must be state residents, which in this case is Alaska residents.

- Filled out the FAFSA

Loans Offered by University of Alaska Fairbanks
Unlike scholarships and grants, loans are money that needs to be repaid. Most loans require some sort of interest, but some do not. Because of repayment, loans are one of the last financial aid options. Make sure that you have exhausted all your other options before going into loans!
In addition, loans come with a whole lot of terms & conditions, and violations of these terms could result in the removal of federal aid and ruined credit reputation. Before you borrow money, understand all the terms and requirements before getting a loan from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
1. Federal Loans
Offered by the federal government, some loans have interest rates while some do not have any interest attached.
A. Federal Direct Subsidized Loan
Since this loan is given based on your demonstrated need, the federal direct subsidized loans do not have interest attached to them.
B. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan
Unlike subsidized loans, the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans is not based on demonstrated financial need, so all students who apply for this loan need to repay their borrowed money with interest.
C. Federal PLUS Loan
While Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans are for undergraduate students, the Federal PLUS Loans are available to graduate students and to parents of dependent undergraduates.
2. Private Loans / State Loans
In addition to loans offered by the federal government, there are more loans offered by private organizations and by the state of Alaska.

Additional Option: Work Study
In addition to scholarships, grants, and even loans, there is an additional opportunity for students who are willing to work for their money at UAF. For US Citizens or Permanent Residents, the Federal Government offers work opportunities for students who have demonstrated financial need.
In order for the government to decide, the student must file FAFSA as early as possible, and then, if you are interested and eligible, you can apply for a work-study position in which you can earn an allowance while studying for college.
