In the state of Alabama, the University of Alabama is the flagship university, and it is also called the Capstone of Higher Education due to its challenging courses.
The ranking does not specifically apply to the University of Alabama since its students are also ranked among the top applicants in the nation. Many UA students have won nationally prestigious awards due to their outstanding applications, and the UA faculty also received many awards due to their excellent service.

Types of Scholarships Offered at University of Alabama
Majority of scholarships offered at the University of Alabama are merit-based, which means the UA Scholarship Committee will be looking at your academic achievements and extracurricular activities during the scholarship process. Since most scholarships are merit-based, the prospective students just have to turn in their admissions application in order to be considered for the UA academic scholarships.
On the other hand, for students who are interested in merit-based and non-merit-based scholarships, there is a separate scholarship application that needs to be filled out. If you want to be considered for all scholarships, the University of Alabama encourages the applicant to fill out the admissions application and the scholarship application by the required deadline.
1. Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen
A. National Merit Scholars
For National Merit Finalists and National Merit Semifinalists, the University of Alabama has set aside large amounts of scholarship money to fund their education. The scholarship values for National Merit Finalists are over the top, but, for the National Merit Semifinalists, you get to receive a scholarship equivalent to the UA Presidential Scholarship.

- Full Tuition for Four Years
- Coverage of Room & Board
- Yearly Stipend for Personal Expenses
- Stipend for Summer Internships or Study Abroad
- Book Stipend for Four Years

B. UA Academic Elite Scholarships
Based on my personal opinion, I think the Academic Elite Scholarship might be the most prestigious scholarship offered by the University of Alabama. Even though it might be the most rewarding, the prospective student must overcome several hurdles to be eligible for the Academic Elite Scholarships.
Also, the eligibility requirements are listed in the order in which they must be completed, so take note of the steps listed down below!
- Be Admitted into University of Alabama
- Complete the UA Honors College Application
- Submit the University Fellows Experience (UFE) Application*
- After Submitting UFE Application, Be Admitted into UFE**
*There is a general underlying requirement for UFE, and the academic requirements are to score at least 32 on the ACT or 1420 on the SAT. After achieving that high standardized test scores, the students with a high school GPA of at least 3.8 are eligible to apply for University Fellows Experience.
**Even though the applicant does not have that high of academic achievements to be eligible for UFE, a prospective student who is eligible for Honors College (Scored at least 28 on ACT OR 1300 on SAT / High School GPA of at least 3.5) can be nominated to UFE through a certain process.
Scholarship Values for Seven Academic Elite Scholarship Recipients:
- Tuition Coverage for Four Years
- One Year of Room & Board
- Living Stipend for Four Years
- Book Stipend for Four Years
Even though I have mentioned only seven scholarship recipients, there are eight students who are receiving this scholarship, and the scholarship values for the top Academic Elite Scholarship Recipient are the following:

- One Year of Room & Board
- Living Stipend for the First Year
- Huge Stipend for the Second Through Fourth Years
- Stipend for Study Abroad
- Book Stipend for Four Years
Unlike the merit-based scholarship which needs only admissions application, the applicant for Academic Elite Scholarships needs to note the application deadlines for admissions, for Honors College Admissions, and also for University Fellows Experience Admissions. Unlike the previous scholarships which required no state residency, the scholarships listed below are separated into two categories. The University of Alabama offers lower tuition to Alabama Residents while demanding a higher fee for Non-Residents of Alabama. Because of this tuition difference, there is also a scholarship difference between these two groups.
If you are a resident of Alabama, look at the scholarship list for In-State, and, for residents of any other states, please skip the In-State and go straight into Out-of-State Scholarships.
Scholarships for In-State Freshmen
Since this is offered by the University of Alabama, in-state residents refer to students with Alabama Residency. Since this is an underlying requirement, I will not include the state residency with the eligibility requirements. Also, the scholarship below includes only merit-based scholarships, so prospective applicants need to apply for UA Admissions to be automatically considered for these scholarships.
Just for clarity and also for shortness, only eligibility requirements and scholarship values will be required for low-value scholarships, and more details will be included for high-value scholarships.
A. University of Alabama Recognition Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 21~24 on the ACT OR 1060 ~ 1190 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $2,000 Per Year
B. Crimson Achievement Scholars
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 25 on the ACT OR 1200 ~ 1220 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $3,000 Per Year
C. University of Alabama Legends Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 26 on the ACT OR 1230 ~ 1250 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $4,000 Per Year
D. Capstone Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 27 on the ACT OR 1260 ~ 1290 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $5,000 Per Year
E. Collegiate Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 28 on the ACT OR 1300 ~ 1320 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $6,000 Per Year
F. Foundation in Excellence Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 29 on the ACT OR 1330 ~ 1350 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5
Scholarship Value: $8,000 Per Year
G. Presidential Scholarships
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored at least 30 ~ 36 on the ACT OR 1360 ~ 1600 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5

H. Presidential Elite Scholars
Having the highest values among the merit-based scholarships, the Presidential Elite Scholars awards full-ride scholarships to students with outstanding academic achievements. Since it has the highest value, this scholarship also has the highest academic standard among the merit-based scholarships.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Scored 36 on the ACT OR 1600 on the SAT
- Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of 4.0
Scholarship Value:
- Full Tuition for Four Years
- One Year of Room & Board
- Low-Value Living Stipend
- Stipend for Summer Research or Study Abroad
- Book Stipend for Four Years
The eligibility requirements included many standardized test scores and high school transcripts, so the University of Alabama included some tips in which applicants can use before they take their standardized tests. Even though you took the standardized tests, the UA still included some helpful information when you are turning in your SAT or ACT scores.

Scholarships for Out-of-State Students
Compared to the In-State Scholarships, the scholarships for Out-of-State students hold a higher scholarship value due to the tuition difference. Even though you might be receiving a higher scholarship amount, that does not mean you are paying less than In-State students. Also, I would aim for the perfect score in standardized testings and high school GPA if you want to get the highest scholarship amount.
