External Scholarships Scholarships by Country Scholarships in New Zealand

Offered by the Maori Education Trust, the Maori Scholarships are awarded to talented students who are in financial need. Depending on the eligibility requirements, the value of scholarships might be larger or smaller, but in order to apply, you need to fit the application requirements of that particular scholarships.

In addition to the eligibility requirements, you need to also consider the application process and the application deadlines. The important information will be listed in the links below each scholarship, so, if you are interested, make note of the application deadlines and the procedure as well!


Types of Maori Scholarships

There are three types of Maori scholarships, and they are secondary (high school), undergraduate (college), and postgraduate (graduate school). In order to save time, make sure that you choose the right category for you! Without further ado, let’s get into the specifics about Maori scholarships.


1. Secondary Maori Scholarships

Since there are so many scholarships for each type, I’m going to save the scholarship descriptions for a later time and go straight into the eligibility requirements and the application links for each scholarship. Pay attention to the scholarship value as well since that is also an important factor!


A. Edward Carlton Holmes Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in a New Zealand Secondary School
  • Whakapapa Verification
  • Submit Your Application Forms on Time

Scholarship Value: Varies

I forgot the mention that there are no separate application forms for each scholarship, but there is a general form that contains all the needed information for 2020 Maori Secondary Scholarships. As you look at the scholarship application down below, make sure that you fulfill the eligibility requirement of the scholarship that you want to apply for!

B. Maori Education Trust Year 10 and 11 Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in a New Zealand Secondary School
  • Show a Proof of Income*

Scholarship Value: $500

*Since this scholarship is based on financial need, the student must prove that he is in need of financial aid in order to apply for this scholarship. Because of the time it might take, applicants are encouraged to start their application process as early as possible!

C. RJ Graham Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Secondary School
  • Show Academic Merit* (NCEA)
  • Show 2020 Class Timetable

Scholarship Value: $500

*Instead of being based on financial need, this scholarship focuses on academic merit. Offering only to Year 12 and Year 13 Maori students, this scholarship is awarded to students studying Te Reo Maori, Mathematics, Information Technology, or Science (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology).

Also, NCEA stands for National Certificate of Educational Achievement, and it is basically SAT or ACT in US Standards. Since the scholarship committee will be needed to scores of NCEA, focusing on internal and external assessments.

D. Rose Hellaby Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Secondary School
  • Show Proof of Income
  • Submit a Copy of Most Recent School Report*

Scholarship Value: $500

*To financially support Year 9 Maori students, this scholarship is need-based and merit-based. Similar to other scholarships, the need-based requirement is the proof of income, and the merit-based requirement is your school report that contains your grades.

E. Sister Annie Henry Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Secondary School
  • Provide Evidence That You Are a Direct Descendant of Reverend John George Laughton*

Scholarship Value: $1,000

*In addition to need-based and merit-based requirements, there are certain requirements such as this one that sets limits the applicants to a very small group. Also, the requirements that I am listing are specific scholarship requirements, so read carefully to the very end!

F. Ti Maru Maori Trust Secondary Boarding Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Secondary School
  • Show Proof of Income
  • Submit a Copy of Most Recent School Report

Scholarship Value: $1,000

Available only to Year 9 Maori students, the Ti Maru Scholarship awards many prospective applicants, so be sure to apply if you fit the eligibility requirements!

G. VW & LM Rosier Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Secondary School
  • Show Proof of Income
  • Submit Certified Copies of Most Recent NCEA Results

Scholarship Value: $500

This Maori scholarship is available to Year 13 Maori students who demonstrate financial need and also NCEA Level 2 Sith Merit or Excellence Endorsement. Also, to view the complete list of Maori secondary scholarships, click on the link two below!

2. Undergraduate Maori Scholarships

If you did skim through the Secondary Maori Scholarships, there were several requirements that were the same through all the scholarships. Same as before, there are several general eligibility requirements, so I’m going to list that first, and then, I’ll go into the specific scholarship requirements.

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent
  • Be Enrolled in New Zealand Tertiary Institute (Colleges, Universities, or Trade Schools)
  • Be Enrolled Full-Time for the Whole School Year

If you do fit the general eligibility requirements of Undergraduate Maori Scholarships, please go on to the specific scholarships offered for prospective college students. Also, the links for each scholarship are different; for some, the links will lead you to the scholarship list, and for others, the links will lead you to the scholarship application.

A. Awhina Nursing Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be Enrolled at the Palmerston North Campus of UCOL*
  • Be in a Study for a Bachelor of Nursing**

Scholarship Value: Varies

*UCOL stands for the Universal College of Learning, which is a public institution located in New Zealand, and Palmerston North Campus is one of the campuses owned by UCOL.

**There is a major requirement, and you must be either in your second or subsequent year in your nursing studies.

Unlike secondary scholarship requirements, the requirements of undergraduate scholarships get more specific and detailed. Don’t be disappointed if you are not eligible for this scholarship since there are many more!

B. Frances Irwin Hunt Art Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be Studying in the Fields of Performing or Cultural Arts
  • Show Proofs of Performing Arts, Cultural Arts or Writing Ability
  • Priority Given to Academic Merit and Financial Need

Scholarship Value: $3,500

Same as before, you need to go into a particular field if you want to receive this scholarship. Keep on checking on the requirements, and if you do want to go into arts, then go ahead and apply for this scholarship!

C. Maori Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be in Your Second or Subsequent Year of Study
  • Evidence Confirming Your Year of Study
  • Priority Given to Students in Financial Need

Scholarship Value: $1,500

The word Subsequent refers to the later years of study; and, in this case, subsequent means the third or fourth year of your study. For many scholarships, priority will be given to students with academic merit or financial need, so be sure to keep a lookout for those types of scholarships!

D. Nicholas Irwin Hunt Writing Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a Writer
  • Proofs of Writing Ability
  • Priority Given to Students Studying in Journalism
  • Preferences Given to Students with Talent in Writing, Academic Merit, and Financial Need

Scholarship Value: $3,500

Personally, I think the evidence of your writing ability will determine whether you get this scholarship or not. Work on your writing skills, revise, and then work on it some more! Also, don’t forget to stay positive and always look on the bright side~

E. Norman Kirk Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be Studying at a Recognized New Zealand Tertiary Institute
  • Priority Given to Students with Merit and Financial Need

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a Maori Ngāti Porou Descent
  • Be Studying in the Fields of Agriculture or Apiculture
  • Priority Given to Students with Financial Need

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be Studying in the Fields of Science, Math, or Technology
  • Preference Given to Students with Merit and Leadership Skills

H. Roy Watling Mitchell Bursaries Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have Attended Secondary School as a Year 13 Student in the Previous Year
  • Testimonial from a Year 13 Teacher, Deputy Principal or Principal
  • Priority Given to Those with Merit and Financial Need

I. Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Attended Ngata Memorial College as a Year 13 Student in the Previous Year
  • Proof of Confirmation that You Were a Year 13 Student in the Previous Year
  • Preference Given to Those with Academic Merit

J. Sister Annie Henry Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • EITHER Be a Direct Descendant of Reverend John Laughton
  • OR Be of Tūhoe Descent

Scholarship Value: $1,000

If you are a direct descendant of Reverend John Laughton, make sure that you show proof that shows that you actually are of his descent

  • Be in a Recognized New Zealand Tertiary Institute
  • Be in Your Final Year of Study
  • Show Proof of Confirmation Regarding Your Year of Study
  • Priority Given to Those with Academic Merit

  • Be Studying for the Four-Year Bachelor of Engineering Degree
  • Be in Your First Year of Study

3. Postgraduate Maori Scholarships

By now, you are probably exhausted by looking through the list of scholarships; however, you just have one more stretch to go! Keep up the good work, and continue reading if you are looking for graduate scholarships.

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be Currently Enrolled at a Tertiary Institute
  • Be Enrolled for the Whole School Year
  • Be of New Zealand Maori Descent (Unless Applying for the Queen Elizabeth II Postgraduate Scholarship)

Unlike the undergraduate and secondary scholarships, the postgraduate scholarships contain high amounts of money, so please read each requirement carefully as you go through the list!


A. Eric Hall McCormick Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be Undertaking Research at a Postgraduate Level*
  • Preferences Given to Students From University of Auckland

Scholarship Value: $7,500

*Also, the research that you are doing must be of a significant benefit to the Maoris. As you look through the eligibility requirements, there are priorities and preferences, but, keep in mind, that those priorities and preferences are not a determining factor of these scholarships.

If you are way ahead of any student in your field, you are guaranteed that scholarship, so don’t be afraid to apply to these scholarships even if you don’t meet the preference or the priority list.

B. Maori Education Trust Postgraduate Scholarship: Hapū or Iwi Development

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Study in a Field That Further Helps the Cause of Hapū or Iwi*
  • Must Submit a Letter of Support From the Chair of Your Iwi

Scholarship Value: $7,500

*The Hapū and the Iwi are the political and the social units of the Maori. Basically, your field must lie to support either the political (governing) side or the social (economic) side of New Zealand.

C. Maori Education Trust Postgraduate Scholarship: STEM

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Submit Two (One is An Academic Reference) References
  • Be Studying in the Fields of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a Maori or a non-Maori Graduate
  • Have Excellent Academic Record
  • Plans to Research in a Field That Will Benefit the Maori

E. Rangiriri and Mātenene Te Whiwhi Winiata Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Show Proof of Confirmation That You Have Received a Master’s Degree

Scholarship Value: $7,500

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have an Excellent Academic Record
  • Currently in a Masters or PhD Program in Engineering, Mathematics, Science, Technology, or Medicine

Scholarship Value: $30,000

Compared to other scholarships, this scholarship has the highest value of them all, and this scholarship amount can be used in other countries as well. The scholarship recipient of Rose Hillary Postgraduate Scholarship can use their money to spend it overseas.
