Types of Scholarships Offered at University of Dayton

The majority of financial aid comes from the University of Dayton Scholarships. Make sure that you read all the requirements before applying for scholarships down below.

1. Merit-Based Scholarships

Also known as academic scholarships, this type of scholarships is based on merit, not financial need. Even though this scholarship is highly sought after, the University of Dayton academic scholarships do not require a separate application.

Just apply for admissions, and you will be automatically considered for the following scholarships down below.

A. Trustees’ Merit Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 4.0 (A)
  • Scored at least 32 on ACT OR 1420 on SAT

Scholarship Value: $23,000 ~ $24,500 per year

B. President’s Merit Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7 (A-)
  • Scored at least 29 on ACT OR 1330 on SAT

Scholarship Value: $20,500 ~ $22,500 per year

C. Dean’s Merit Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.3 (B+)
  • Scored at least 27 on ACT OR 1260 on SAT

Scholarship Value: $17,000 ~ $19,500 per year

D. Father Chaminade Awards

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Maintained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.0 (B)
  • Scored at least 21 on ACT OR 1060 on SAT

Scholarship Value: $15,500 ~ $12,000 per year

To be honest, these scholarship value doesn’t really mean anything to you unless you know the real cost of college that includes tuition, room & board, and other mandatory fees. Before we get any further, check the tuition cost at the University of Dayton.

In addition, the students at Dayton do not have to worry about increasing the cost of tuition. Since the financial aid options increase with the tuition, the students pay the same amount of tuition fee every year during their undergraduate career.

2. Alumni Scholarships

Alumni Scholarships apply to students who have relations with a UD (University of Dayton) graduates or students who have family members who are of the Catholic faith.

A. Deacons Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must have meet the following requirements:

  • Be an incoming freshmen
  • Be a student whose father, grandfather or uncle is a permanent, active deacon of the Roman Catholic or Orthodox Church
  • Filed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Scholarship Value: $5,000 per year

Even though it is an automatic scholarship, the FAFSA is a required field since the University of Dayton awards it to students who have demonstrated financial need. If you fit the first two requirements, be sure to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible since funding is limited!

B. National Alumni Association

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be an incoming freshmen
  • Be a student whose parent or grandparent is a University of Dayton graduate
  • Submitted the FAFSA before the application deadline

Scholarship Value: $5,000 per year

Similar to the first one, this alumni scholarship does require FAFSA since it is also based on demonstrated financial need.

3. Competitive Scholarships

Offered by various departments within the University of Dayton, these competitive scholarships are highly sought for even though they might not have the highest scholarship value.

A. Athletic Scholarships

Except football, the University of Dayton competes in every sport at the NCAA Division I, which is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. Because of its need for athletically talented students, the University of Dayton sports faculty gives scholarships to students with outstanding athletic achievements.

B. Department / Division Award

The academic departments within University of Dayton offer scholarships to upper-class students. Since you need to declare your intended major or minor during your sophomore or junior year of college, the different academic departments and divisions financially encourage students by giving scholarships to upper-class students.

C. Donor – Funded Awards

Funded by UD alumni, private organizations, and corporations, the donor-funded awards vary in scholarship amount and renewal period. This is a competitive scholarship which requires a separate application for each individual scholarship.

D. Music Talent Awards / Visual Arts Awards

Based on competition, the music talent awards are given out through music auditions, and visual arts awards are based on the portfolio that you have submitted through the admissions application.

4. Scholarships for Veterans

US Air Force ROTC / US Army ROTC

For cadets involved in ROTC, the University of Dayton has provided supplemental scholarships* for their four years in college.

*Supplemental Scholarships applies to scholarships that stack on other scholarship. For example, if you have already received one of the academic scholarships, you can also stack this scholarship on top.

Military Family Scholarships by Federal Government

Funded by the federal government and nonprofit organizations, this scholarship goes to veterans, future military service members, active military members, and family members who are related to veterans or active military service members.

5. State Scholarships

In addition to funding from the federal government, the state of Ohio has multiple grants and scholarships for students who are Ohio-Residents. Similar to scholarships, grants do not have to be repaid but make sure that there are no strings attached to your financial aid option before applying for any grants or scholarships.
