Types of Scholarships
Since we are looking mainly at undergraduate scholarships, there are many scholarships for incoming freshmen and some for transfer students.
1. Scholarships for Prospective Freshmen
For incoming freshmen, there are two types of scholarships. One is merit-based scholarships that are evaluated based on your GPA and standardized test scores, and the other is competitive scholarships, which is also based on academic achievements but requires additional documents.
Also, for merit-based scholarships, students do not need to file FAFSA, but students need to file FAFSA if they are applying for need-based scholarships.
A. Colorado School of Mines Merit Scholarships
The merit scholarship is based on the cumulative high school GPA and highest composite test scores (Colorado School of Mines does not super score). To be considered, the recipient must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Freshmen who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents
- Be admitted early into Colorado School of Mines
The merit scholarship is an automatic scholarship, so you do not need to file a separate application. Your application for admissions serves as your application for scholarship. Because of the difference in tuition fees between Colorado Residents and Out-of-State Residents, the scholarship value differs between the groups.
For Colorado Residents, the merit scholarship ranges from $2,500 ~ $5,000 per year, and the minimum requirement is at least 3.5 GPA with 27 ACT OR 1260 ACT. As you go higher in GPA and standardized test scores, you will receive a higher scholarship amount.
For Non-Residents, the merit scholarship ranges from $9,000 ~ $14,000 per year, and the minimum requirement is at least 3.25 GPA with 27 ACT OR 1260 SAT.
B. E-Days Scholarships
Available only to Colorado Residents, the E-Days Scholarship awards full-tuition for four years. Since this is a competitive scholarship, the E-Days Scholarship requires a separate application and essay.
This scholarship is based on high school academic achievements (plus extracurricular activities), competitive essay, and other information. Also, only accepted students may apply for this scholarship.

C. Harvey Scholarship Programs
To apply for this scholarship, you need to be given an invitation to apply. In order to get the scholarship invitation, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be a freshmen candidate for fall admissions
- Be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident
- Submitted the admissions application before the priority deadline
- Submitted the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
- Meet the minimum requirements for high school GPA and standardized test scores (Set by Admissions Office)
The Harvey Scholarship Program covers full tuition and mandatory fees. In addition to the scholarship, the Harvey Scholars can get travel grants and enrichment grants.
D. PATHS Scholarships
Known as the Path Ambassadors to High Success, the PATHS Scholarship offers $5,000 ~ $10,000 per year. In order to apply for PATHS Scholarships, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Colorado high school senior or community college transfer student who is accepted into Colorado School of Mines
- Be interested in Computer Science major
- Meet the PATHS eligibility criteria

2. Scholarships for Transfer Students
A. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
For prospective transfer students, this is the only scholarship that is available to them, but don’t worry, there are also scholarships from outside organizations in which you can apply for.
To be considered, the transfer student must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree, and they must be a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
3. Outside Scholarships
A. Colorado Scholars
For recipients of Mines Merit Scholarship who are eligible for Pell Grant due to their FAFSA, they will receive an additional scholarship that will cover the remaining tuition and mandatory fees for four years.
B. ROTC Scholarship
There are two types of ROTC Scholarship which are Air Force and Army ROTC Scholarships. For Air Force, the award amount varies based on the type of scholarship awarded, but, for the Army, the ROTC Scholarship covers full tuition and mandatory fees.

How to Maintain Your Scholarship
Most, if not all, scholarships are renewable year by year. For example, the Colorado School of Mines Merit Scholarship is renewable for four years, and there a string attached to this. In order to renew your scholarship, you need to fulfill an additional requirement.
For merit-based scholarships, you need to maintain a certain GPA average while a full-load of undergraduate courses. For some, you need to fulfill hours in community service or leadership training, and for exceptional few, you need to make a commitment to serve in the military or teach in schools.
For every scholarship that is renewable, there is a renewable criteria in which the scholarship recipient must meet. If you meet the requirement, then you are good to go for another year; however, if you fail to meet the requirement, then you forfeit the scholarship.
Even if you receive a scholarship, be careful of the eligibility requirements for renewal since it is very important!
