Nevada Scholarships

Established in 1957, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public research university that is not located in California, Las Vegas but in Nevada, Las Vegas. Because of its long name, University of Nevada, Las Vegas will be referred to as UNLV for clarity sake.

Driven by the creativity of their students, the UNLV continues to strive toward their mark: joining the ranks of nation’s top public research universities. Because of their excellence in research, and high quality in education, the UNLV attracts students from all over the world.

Known as the most diverse university for undergraduates, the UNLV strives to be the first in everything, and I hope you can see their efforts demonstrated by the scholarships down below.


Types of Scholarships Offered by UNLV

In order to lessen the burden of student’s finances, the UNLV offers many scholarships and grants that do not have to be repaid. Since there are high-value scholarships, make sure to check the eligibility requirements to see if you are eligible.


1. Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

Applicants cannot receive multiple scholarships at once since UNLV allows only one scholarship per scholarship applicant. All scholarships in this section are automatic scholarships, which require no separate application in addition to your admissions application.

To save words and your time, only eligibility requirements and scholarship values will be listed for your information.


A. UNLV Rebel Challenge Scholarship

Even in this scholarship, there are different awards based on your academic merit. The eligibility requirements list the minimum academic requirement and don’t be content of barely passing those since you will be receiving the minimum amount of scholarship money.

Make sure to achieve over and beyond since that will guarantee you the largest scholarship award. To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.25
  • Scored at least 1130 on SAT OR 23 on ACT
  • Must be a Non-Resident of Nevada
  • Must be a First-Time Undergraduate*
  • Must reside in UNLV Residence Hall for Freshmen Year

*Students who have previously never attended college

Scholarship Value: $11,000 ~ $7,000 per year

B. UNLV President’s Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a National Merit Finalist
  • Must list UNLV as the Institution of First-Choice
  • Be a First-Time Undergraduate
  • Be Admitted to UNLV

Scholarship Value: $10,000 per year + Grant for Study Abroad Trip

C. UNLV Provost’s Scholarship

Available to prospective students, this automatic scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Scored at least 30 on ACT OR 1390 on SAT
  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.8
  • Be a First-Time Undergraduate
  • Priority Given to Students with FAFSA*

*Since this is partially need-based scholarship, students are encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to demonstrate financial need.

Scholarship Value: $5,500 per year

Also, since funding is limited, make sure to apply for UNLV Admissions as early as possible in order to be considered for this merit-based scholarship.

D. UNLV Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Meet One of the Following:
    • Scored at least 27 on ACT OR 1280 on SAT / HS* GPA 3.5
    • Scored at least 27 on ACT OR 1280 on SAT / HS GPA 3.8
  • Be a First-Time Undergraduate
  • Special Consideration Given to Students Who Filed FAFSA

*High School

Scholarship Value: $4,500 per year

Majority of the scholarships offered to incoming freshmen are renewable for four years. At the end of each year, the scholarship recipient must meet the renewal requirements to renew their scholarship for another year. E. UNLV Rebel’s Scholarship

Interestingly, this UNLV merit-based scholarship has different academic standards in their eligibility requirements, so make sure you read all the specific details!

  • Meet One of the Following:
    • Scored at least 25 on ACT OR 1200 on SAT / GPA of 3.2
    • Scored at least 25 on ACT OR 1200 on SAT / GPA of 3.5
    • Scored at least 23 on ACT OR 1130 on SAT / GPA of 3.7
  • Be a First-Time Undergraduate
  • Priority Consideration Given to Students Who Filed FAFSA

Scholarship Value: $1,800 per year

Same as before, applying as early as possible can be a determining factor of whether you getting a scholarship or not, so make sure to file the FAFSA and apply for UNLV earlier than the rest of the incoming undergraduate class.

F. UNLV Valedictorian Scholarship

As its name implies, you might know what one of the eligibility requirements is, but I’ll let you figure it out as you read the following requirements:

  • Be a First-Time Undergraduate
  • Be Admitted to UNLV as a Freshman
  • Complete FAFSA
  • Be Designated as Class Rank of 1 OR as Valedictorian of Your High School Class

Scholarship Value: $1,000 per year

G. Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)


2. Scholarships for Transfers

Unlike many scholarships offered to incoming students, there is a limited number of scholarships for transfer students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Transfer at least 90 Credit Hours
  • Maintained a College GPA of 3.0
  • Must be a Non-Resident of Nevada

Scholarship Value: $5,000 ~ $11,000

Grants Offered by University of Nevada, Las Vegas

As usual, there are several types of grants that are offered by UNVL. Some are funded by the federal government, and some of funded by UNVL and the state of Nevada. Since government funding and UNLV funding are both limited, applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
