A. WVU Foundation Scholarship

  • Be a Graduate from a High School in West Virginia OR Be a Home Schooler at least Their Senior Year in West Virginia
  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.80
  • Scored at least 31 on ACT OR 1390 on SAT

Scholarship Value: Full Tuition + Stipend for Study Abroad

West Virginia University sets high academic standards for the Foundation Scholarship, and it encourages prospective students to apply as early as you can. Since this is a competitive scholarship, applicants need to submit the WVU Admissions Application, and, in addition, you also need to submit a separate scholarship application for the Foundation Scholarship.

2. WVU Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen (Non-Residents of West Virginia)

There is a full-ride scholarship for even the non-residents of West Virginia, but that scholarship is included in the section down below since it is also available to all students. A. WVU University Merit Scholarship

This scholarship also have certain requirements that are for a specific group of people, and the University Merit Scholarship has the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a National Merit Finalist or Achievement Finalist*
  • Select WVU as His First Choice of Institution
  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.50

*To be named a National Merit Finalist or Achievement Finalist, the high school students need to take the PSAT/NMSQT in their junior year. Also, they need a high score in order to be gain these titles from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

3. WVU Transfer Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

Instead of listing separate scholarships for WVU transfer students, this post will include general eligibility requirements and the overarching scholarship value. Also, the application deadlines and scholarship values may change year by year, so please check the specific details in the West Virginia University’s homepage.

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be an Incoming Transfer Student to WVU
  • Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.0
  • Be Transferring Between 12 to 115 Credit Hours

Scholarship Value: $11,000 ~ $1,500 Per Year

5. WVU Other Scholarship Opportunities


A. WVU Leadership Scholarships

Awarded to students who show exceptional potential in leadership, West Virginia University offers great scholarships to incoming freshmen who have received the highest levels of honor from nationally acclaimed organizations.

The WVU has limited the number of organizations and awards to the following: Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout Rank), Girl Scouts of the USA (Gold Award), 4-H*, Civil Air Patrol (Amelia Earhart Award), Boys and Girls Nation (Be Selected and Attend), American Heritage Girls and Boy Scouts of America Venturing (Star & Stripes Award).

*Be selected by a home state to be a delegate to the National 4-H Congress (Or received a charting pin in West Virginia)

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant needs to receive one of the above awards and meet the general eligibility requirements:

  • Be an Incoming Freshmen to WVU
  • Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.0
  • Scored at least 21 on the ACT OR 1070 on SAT

Scholarship Value: $500 Per Year*

*This scholarship is a supplemental scholarship, which can be stacked on top of any merit-based scholarship that you will receive.

B. WVU Diversity Scholarships

In order to encourage a diverse community within their WVU campus, West Virginia University has established diversity scholarships to award underrepresented talented students. To be considered, the following eligibility requirements must be met:

  1. Maintained a Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.00
  2. Scored at least 21 on ACT OR 1070 on SAT
  3. Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  4. Submit FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  5. Be Admitted as an Incoming Freshmen to West Virginia University*
  6. Turn in the WVU Diversity Scholarship Application

*Also, the applicant needs to be admitted to WVU’s Morgantown Campus in order to be considered for this scholarship.

Scholarship Value: $2,500 ~ $1,500 Per Year

For this scholarship, there are many application deadlines to consider since there is admissions application, FAFSA application, and the separate scholarship application. Make sure to note the deadlines for each since they are very important!
