Minnesota Scholarships

Being the largest private university in Minnesota, the University of St. Thomas offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate programs to their students. Founded with Catholic background, the University of St. Thomas is a Catholic University that seeks to preserve its religious heritage.

Having three campuses in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Rome, Italy, the University of St. Thomas offers unique opportunities to their incoming students. Striving for diversity and for positive societal impact, the “Changemaker Campus” is another nickname for the University of St. Thomas.

Types of St. Thomas Scholarships

There are different types of scholarships that are being offered by the University of St. Thomas, and, among those scholarships, there is a full-ride scholarship program that is available for all incoming students.

1. St. Thomas Institutional Scholarships

St. Thomas Institutional Scholarships include merit-based scholarships that do not require a separate application. After applying for admissions, all eligible applicants will be automatically considered for merit-based scholarships.

A. Freshman Academic Scholarships

Awarding from $9,000 ~ $30,000 per year, the St. Thomas Academic Scholarships are merit-based scholarship that is based on one’s academic performance and extracurricular activities such as community or school services.

These awards are given only to prospective freshmen, and about 97 percent of the incoming freshmen receive this type of award.

B. Transfer Scholarships

This scholarship awards $3,000 ~ $20,000 per year, and the award is given to prospective transfer students who are earning their first undergraduate degree.

Somewhat different from the freshman academic scholarships, the transfer scholarships are renewable as long as the scholarship recipient meets the following requirements:

  • Be remaining as a full-time St. Thomas student.
  • Be maintaining at least a cumulative college GPA of 2.0.
  • Has fewer than 176 total credits

C. National Merit Finalists

Awarding an additional $10,000 per year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation gives scholarship money to National Merit Scholars who declare St. Thomas University as their first-choice institution.

D. Frey Opportunity Grant

Funded by generous donors, the Frey Opportunity Grant awards students with significant demonstrated need. The eligibility requirement will be based on his FAFSA.

E. Board of Trustees Academic Scholars

This scholarship value ranges from $1,000 ~ $3,000 per year, and this scholarship is open to all admitted freshmen students who have at least a high school cumulative GPA of 3.5 and have at least an ACT score of 25 or at least an SAT score of 1210.

F. Dease Scholarship Program

This is a full-ride scholarship that is only given to ten students. Covering the full tuition, all admitted freshmen students that are underrepresented domestic, first-generation students and/or graduates from urban high schools are eligible for this scholarship.

2. Opus College of Business Scholarships

As its name states, this type of scholarship is only available to students who are majoring in business. If you are not interested in a business major, please skip to the next type of scholarships.

A. Fauth Business Scholarships

Awarding up to $10,000 per year to four students, the Fauth Business Scholarship requires the following:

  • Be prospective freshmen who are applying for St. Thomas
  • Be intending to be a business major
  • Have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Have scored at least 26 on the ACT or at least 1240 on SAT

B. GHR Fellows Program

This scholarship includes full tuition scholarships plus covering the fees for study abroad leadership trip, and it is for undergraduate students who are pursuing a business degree. To be eligible for this scholarship, the first two requirements of GHR is the same the above requirements.

  • Have maintained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.7 or higher
  • Have scored at least 28 on the ACT or at least 1310 on SAT
  • Be involved with community services and live out the values of St. Thomas

For business scholarships that are from $10,000 to Full Tuition, the applicants must fill out an application before the deadline, and they are invited to attend the Test Day at St. Thomas for their final round.

C. Schulze Innovation Scholarships

Awarding full-tuition to several students, the Schulze Innovation Scholarship is funded by Schulze School of Entrepreneurship to encourage any students who are interested in Entrepreneurship. To be considered, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Prospective freshmen who have applied to St. Thomas
  • Intend to major in entrepreneurship
  • Have at least a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0
  • Scored at least 27 on the ACT or 1280 on the SAT

D. Willis Drake Young Entrepreneur Scholarships

Unlike previous scholarships, Willis Drake Young Entrepreneur Scholarship only awards $2,000 for only one year, and the applicants must fulfill the first two requirements of Schulze Innovation Scholarship.

3. STEM Scholarships

STEM is a word that is commonly seen in science projects, and STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. If your intended major falls into one of these four categories, please look at the scholarships listed below.

A. Board of Governors Scholarship

This scholarship awards only one renewable $10,000 Engineering Scholarship to prospective freshmen who fit the following requirements:

  • Intend to major in Engineering
  • Have at least cumulative high school GPA of 3.5
  • Scored at least 24 in the ACT or 1180 in the SAT

B. Science, Mathematics, & Engineering Scholarships

Awarding only four students, the SME Scholarships award two full-tuition scholarships and two $8,000 per year scholarships. To be considered, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Intend to major related with science, mathematics, or engineering
  • Have at least cumulative high school GPA of 3.5
  • Score at least 27 in the ACT or 1280 in the SAT

4. Miscellaneous Scholarships

This type of scholarships falls into many different categories, so make sure you read through all the requirements to see if you are eligible or not.

A. ThreeSixty Journalism Scholarship

Awarding only one student a full-tuition scholarship, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an admitted prospective freshmen at St. Thomas
  • Completed a ThreeSixty Summer Camp
  • Intend to major in Communication and Journalism

B. Whalen Scholarship for Communication and Journalism

Awarding $2,000 per year, the recipient must meet the following requirements:

  • Be admitted at St. Thomas and also be a prospective freshmen
  • Intend to major in Journalism and Communication

C. Music Major Scholarship

This scholarship ranges from $1,000 ~ $8,500 per year, and this award is for students who are intending to major in music, music performance, music education, or music business.

D. Habiger Institute Latino Scholars Scholarships

Awarding $2,000 per year, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Be admitted at St. Thomas as a prospective freshmen
  • Involved in the parish and Latino community
  • Intend to major or minor in Catholic Studies

5. Outside Scholarships

A. Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program

This scholarship awards up to $4,000 per year, and the applicant must meet the following requirements to be considered:

  • Possess one-fourth or more Indian ancestry
  • Be a Minnesota resident
  • Be a member of a federally recognized Indian tribe

B. Minnesota Public Safety Officers

The awarding amount for this scholarship program varies from year to year, and this is for the family of Minnesota public safety officer that was killed in the line of duty.
